Climate Change Museum in NY

Project Description

During the first three projects in this advanced studio, we prensented our work as a group of three, produced a schematic design for a Museum of Climate Change that is to be located at Pier 57 (250 11th Avenue) in Manhattan. Our schematic design represented the main design intent, concept, and presented all of the major
spaces at the museum. The third project requires our team to further develop this schematic design, so
that all of the programmatic elements have been carefully considered and are present in the museum.
Design Concept

By selectively picking some conclusions and ignoring others, it is possible for human beings to form one-sided judgments on the issue of climate change. Our climate change museum would provides more opportunities for people to think about climate change from various perspectives, giving people more a comprehensive understanding of climate change. This project aims to communicate the idea of climate change solely through the presentation of climate change facts, without passing judgement, leaving space for visitors to reflect on their own experiences within the museum.

We selected our exhibition program based on three categories, which are a loop from sea creatures, to land animals, to birds or insects that fly in the sky. Through immersive experiences throughout the museum, people would experience climate change not only as a human being but also from the perspective of other creatures.

Another exhibition area would be on top of these experience rooms, exhibiting “what is happening” and “ why it is happening” under the subject of climate change, which would give people more detailed information, corresponding to the immersive experience room underneath them.

Global warming is also one of the reasons for the increasing weather issues in urban areas. We selected places like Beijing, California and Moyale in Kenya, which reflect the current situation of our cities in a global perspective to bring people back to the grim reality of our living world.

A ribbon of interactive systems would run through the whole journey in the museum for people to exchange their observations. At the end of the journey, people would have a chance to express their own opinions after the experience with both good and bad effects of climate change on our living world in all aspects.

We try to immerse the museum within the site by creating visual connections between interior and exterior, as well as a coherent picture of our museum within the urban context.

Project 4 (Individual Work)
I was trying to think of a way to transform the traditional one-way communication inside the museum to conversation. In this project, I’m dealing with the discussion area, a space where people can bring up new topics or questions about climate change, express themselves and exchange their ideas.

The discussion is immersed within the whole journey of museum. It is accessible to people whole just arrived the museum, or after the experience with both good and bad effects of climate change on our living world in all aspects in those immersive experiencing room. People can also enter this area even though they skip some of the experiencing rooms or exhibition rooms when go through fast pass. A ribbon of interactive systems would run through the whole journey in the museum for people to exchange their observations.

People who come to this museum might be from everywhere in the world and they barely know each other, but it is hard for people to talk with a stranger face to face. I was thinking to create opportunities for indirect communication so that they would be willing to express their own opinions. The installation in the middle of the ramp is for these indirect communications. People could record their voice through this device and listen to other people’s idea. The devices are installed with different heights for different group of people (adults and children), but adults can choose to pull them down and share with their children.

We try to immerse the museum within the site by creating visual connections between interior and exterior. In discussion area, there is a huge screen projecting some opinions and the information shared by the audience, people could still see the info on the giant screen from a very far distance.
